Just in time for Thanksgiving - here are the recipes requested by participants at last Thursday's NExpress Users Group Retreat.
Praline Cheesecake (adapted from Gourmet Magazine)
Line 10-inch springform pan with a graham cracker crumb crust (or crumb & ground pecan combo), then set aside.
Preheat oven to 350. In a large mixing bowl, beat 2 pounds (4 8-oz.pkgs.) of softened cream cheese with 2 cups packed brown sugar until smooth. Beat in 3 eggs, one at a time, and 1 t. vanilla. Stir in 3 tablespoons flour and 1 cup coarsely chopped pecans. Pour into crust and bake about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cool on a rack to room temperature, then chill 2 hours or more.
Marinated Vegetables (adapted from the Chicago Tribune)
For marinade, blend (in blender) until smooth: 1/3 cup red wine vinegar (or white wine vinegar for light-colored veggies), 3/4 cup olive oil, 1 tablespoon chopped onion, 2-3 cloves garlic (peeled), 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/8 teaspoon each dried rosemary, basil, and oregano (or more if using fresh herbs), and a dash of cayenne. Set aside.
Use any colorful combination of fresh vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, yellow squash, red and/or green peppers, mushrooms, green beans, cauliflower, snow peas, etc. Steam or boil until crisp-tender (dense ones take longer to cook, so take that into account). Drain well and toss with dressing while still hot. Marinate at room temperature until serving time. (Marinated artichoke heats, roasted red peppers, black olives can be added while vegetables are marinating.)
Before serving, pour off extra dressing. Garnish with cherry or grape tomatoes. (Crumbled feta or coarsely-grated parmasan are also good.)

On May 25, 2007 President Bush signed legislation (H.R. 2206) that included increasing the federal minimum wage for the first time since 1997. The Act, referred to as the U.S. Troop Readiness, Veterans' Care, Katrina Recovery, and Iraq Accountability Appropriations Act, 2007 contains the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 (Title VIII, Subtitle A) and the Small Business and Work Opportunity Tax Act of 2007 (Title VIII, Subtitle B).
The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 increases the federal minimum wage rate to:
- $5.85, effective 60 days after the date of enactment (i.e., July 24, 2007)
- $6.55, effective 12 months after the 60th day (i.e., July 24, 2008)
- $7.25, effective 24 months after that 60th day (i.e., July 24, 2009)
This is NOT an optional wage if a public library has any staff currently employed making less than $5.85 per hour. No delays, no loopholes- new hourly rate takes effect on July 24th.
So how does this impact you? Two ways come to mind--
1) 2008 Budget -- the same people making $5.85 in January 2008 will be making $6.55 per hour for any days worked after July 23rd.
2) August 2007 paychecks for those with the change in wage. The employee would be paid the existing rate of pay for hours worked July 1 through July 23rd, and the new minimum wage for the hours starting on July 24th.
Please feel free to call (888-296-6963) or e-mail me (ldebaun@nekls.org) if you have any questions.

Oh, the mysteries of the modern phone company. I wish I could express how sorry I am about all the messages this morning about this.
THIS IS THE FINAL, and CORRECT information (as we know it now).
Due to the incomplete nature of the building we are moving to, NEKLS network services will be taken down ***next Wednesday, May 30 at 2:00pm*** instead of today as originally planned.
This will ONLY affect the following services:
KanREN intranet libraries in the 785 area code.
All NEKLS eMail users,
Library patrons of the Paola library subscription databases.
The Kansas Reads to Preschoolers website.
When the move occurs, it will take down these services for at least 4 hours on Wednesday, May 30. We hope it won't take that long to complete what we need to do, but that gives us a nice window to complete the move.

I am pleased to announce that Heather Braum has been appointed Technical Support Technician for the Northeast Kansas Library System, effective April 16th. Heather is currently working as Network Analyst for the Shawnee Mission School District providing technical support to classroom teachers and technology centers. Heather in her second semester in the SLIM Library Science program at Emporia State University.
Heather's primary responsibility will be providing telephone and onsite technical support for NEKLS libraries. Just as soon as Heather is on board and acclimated, Heather, Liz and Brenda will be organizing visits to NEKLS libraries to discuss your technical support needs.
